Chapter 8

You gave yourself a few days for contemplation and solitude. Being locked up in your house without contact from the outside world was exactly what you needed.

Your family tried to call your phone multiple times, leaving messages regarding their concerns. You were just as quick to request a phone number change the previous day, making a fresh start already.

You knew you wanted to become a stronger psychic, despite your nature. The psychic crusaders were willing to help you improve and control your powers. Were you willing to help yourself?

Contemplation in the early morning produced somewhat erratic thoughts and racing memories of current events. A quick cup of your favorite beverage should wake you up.

You decided to sleep in, until Burny had jumped out of your bed, removing the warmth from your body and her job as your pillow. You didn't wake up well after that. You tend to be more angry after a rude awakening.

You were still angry over your burdensome family berating you about your whereabouts. They knew nothing, and you wanted to keep it that way. For once, you wanted to be happy. There were no interests that brought you together with them. Your antisocial behavior was considered the norm.

They happened to catch the sight of Burny, and they knew there was something going on. Your whole life was dedicated to hating trainers and their mistreatment of Pokemon. They wanted to know what was happening to you, why you were changing.

You didn't think having Burny in your life would put such a smile on your face, a smile the world didn't deserve to see.

You wondered why you bothered staying in Bristlecone town. The town offered nothing for you. It was small and filled with idiots.

Hopefully, no one would bother you today. You glanced at your hand, clenching it into a fist and then stretching it out. There was no way you could be some kind of fighter. You were against violence. You still felt bad for punching Mewtwo in the face during your first training session.

You hoped that Mew calmed down and forgave Deoxys, because you wanted to return to the church for more training.

This time, you would bring Burny with you. She didn't need to be left by herself. You were annoyed enough by your nosy family. They didn't deserve to be around you. It wasn't as if they participated in your life.

Hopefully, Karry would mind her own damn business this time.

You felt like you needed more caffeine before venturing out. You contemplated on the things you could learn from Deoxys. His plans were a bit more promising. Mewtwo was too angry for your taste. He was a bad mentor.

You glanced at your TV to learn about current events. Besides the increasing violence with weapons, the trainers had still been getting their Pokemon screened at the local hospitals. Nothing new there. Just reminders.

A new bit of information was released, though. Your eyes were quick to focus on the screen.

"The government has orders to allow federally owned psychic Pokemon to be in hospitals and public buildings. We were told that they are trained to assist in the regulations that were imposed in order to help facilitate the screening process."

You guess that explained why you saw Vardae at the hospital, just helping out... Zamal wasn't comfortable with the psychic Pokemon roaming around. They were mind bending monsters when pissed off.

The government was allied with these psychics? You wondered what they had to gain from it.

Mew mentioned that there were human psychics running errands for her. Perhaps, she had a direct involvement with them.

You decided to return to the church with questions on your mind.

It didn't take long for you to realize the place was too quiet. You didn't even catch sight of the pissy pink cat.

You brought Burny with you this time, and the Growlithe was happily wagging her tail.

You witnessed the presence of Vardae. She had her arms crossed angrily.

"Human girl, I was instructed to chaperone you for awhile. Keep your mutt at bay and we'll make this quick," Vardae hissed.

Burny growled and lowered her dog ears. You glared at Vardae in retaliation.

"Hey, be nice to my dog. She's all that I got. I abhor violence, but don't dis my friend," you warned.

Vardae rolled her eyes, "Fine, just keep it away from me and I won't say a thing about it."

"What's the plan?" you asked.

"Well, Mew believes you're too timid to face off against Mewtwo, and Deoxys is too gentle with his terms. I'll be instructing you on my own. Don't complain to me. I'm really not in the mood to deal with you," Vardae grumbled.

"So, Mew's bouncing me around mentors," you causally stated.

"No, I'm only going to help you once, until Deoxys' brain has been fried by Mew and Mewtwo decides to stop throwing a tantrum. Honestly, boys are more sensitive than girls. They need their egos stroked, not ripped apart like what you're trying to accomplish. They don't need to be fighting over a human girl, anyway. You're just another decoy in the grand schemes of things. It would have been better to get your mind wiped than to tango with us. You have no idea what you're getting into," Vardae explained.

Her glared never ceased while speaking to you. She must have been sore over your cheesy conversation with Mewtwo. Calling him "Master Mewtwo" as a joke wasn't funny to her. She was a jealous little thing.

She would be pretty fun to mess with. Maybe you'll learn a bit about Vardae.

She grudgingly held out her hand, "Grab hold."

"We're besties, now?" you joked.

"No," she stated. "I have no desire to speak with you girl. I dislike how you disregarded Mewtwo's feelings when he was assigned to assist you. We are not toys for you to choose from. You should be grateful that we have allowed your presence. Mew is too generous for my liking."

Perhaps she had a point. You really weren't interested in giving Mewtwo another chance to train you. You were set on Deoxys training you instead.

"Perhaps you are too young, or too sheltered, to understand what is happening in the world right now. There will be a time when you will take my words by heart. Your friends will remain fewer and your enemies will be many. These other psychics are my family. I will protect them with my life. If you understood how strong kinship is, than you would feel the same towards your dog. Your presence is changing my family. I do not appreciate you being here," she explained.

You had reached for her hand already and smiled. Vardae blinked in surprise.

You were gently swinging her hand while she was speaking.

"Stop that," she ordered.

Your surroundings changed. You were surprised to be at the hospital.

"Why are we here?" you asked.

She made a face before releasing your hand. "I'm going to teach you empathy. You seem to lack it."

Vardae beckoned for you to follow her. Eventually, she walked in a room filled with Pokemon that were temporarily separated from their trainers. It was the screening process you heard about.

There was a female Kadabra analyzing them. Kadabras were fox-like in appearance, with a rather armored brown torso and shoulders, with yellow fur sprouting on their bodies. A red star decorated her forehead, and she had a long bushy tail.

"Starlene," nodded Vardae to the Kadabra.

"What brings you here?" asked Starlene.

"New recruit needs manners," Vardae stated bluntly.

"Oh, I see..." Starlene mused. The Kadabra motioned for you to sit beside her.

You did as instructed, and your eyes locked on to the Pokemon in front of you. You weren't sure what kind it was.

The Kadabra focused, and you felt her psychic energy vibrating, and warming your body.

"This Pokemon has lived a pampered life. They were inherited by a younger trainer after its own died. Seems to be in distress. Desires to return to its original trainer," Starlene stated.

So they were reading the minds of the Pokemon in order to screen them. Huh.

"They want to be freed. I suggest we allow this Pokemon to be released back into the wild. They desire to be at the grave site of original trainer," Starlene added.

You felt bad for the unknown Pokemon in front of you. It was unhappy, and unable to communicate its thoughts.

Starlene used her abilities to collect the Pokemon's ball to recall the creature back in the device.

Another Pokemon was released from their ball. Starlene focused on them next.

"Hmm... This Pokemon isn't sure what it wants. It enjoys the attention it gets front its trainer, but also misses its family in the wild. I suggest we give this one time to think," Starlene stated.

The process repeated, and the ball of this Pokemon was used to recall the creature.

Another Pokemon appeared in front of you. You happened to recognize it. It was the Charizard from the Steelix incident.

"This Pokemon is angry at its trainer, but feels divided between its morals and duty. Feels insecure and doesn't trust its trainer. They are considering the time with the trainer and being raised well. Decides to stay with trainer despite its feelings," Starlene said.

The Charizard looked at you, and widened its eyes in surprise.

"I see... This Pokemon knows you, human girl. It feels terrible for its actions and is happy you survived," Starlene stated.

You sighed, with a small tear running down your face. Your hand reached out to gently touch the dragon's snout.

"You shouldn't feel like you have to stay with your trainer if you feel torn up about it. If you can't trust someone completely, or dread their presence... then that's a bad relationship. Do what's best for you," you whispered.

The Charizard's eyes were brimming with tears.

"It seems this Pokemon agrees with you. It decided it wanted its freedom," Starlene said.

You stared at the Charizard as it was recalled into its ball.

"Do you understand now? What we are trying to accomplish is beyond ourselves. You saw for yourself how these Pokemon feel. We psychics are the diplomats between Humans and Pokemon. We can't be selfish, as their lives depend on it. To suffer at the hands of an abusive relationship with a trainer is the worst fate of Pokemon-kind. We need to overcome our personal feelings and do what's best for the whole," Vardae whispered.

You nodded your head, "I understand."

She gave a curt nod as well, "Good. It seems I got through your thick skull. Males aren't too good with their words. It seems that their actions speak the most about their feelings."

"It applies to human men as well," you stated.

"I have no other lessons for you, human. It seems that you've learned enough with your own eyes. Now, you need to make your decision and do what's best. Mewtwo is a better suited mentor for you, despite how you may feel about his methods. Give him the chance to prove himself. He have an ego like any male does. Deoxys on the other hand..." Vardae trailed off, trying to contemplate, "...I really can't explain him. He's a bit of a wild card. I suggest you not get your hopes high for him. His words may be pretty to you, but he's never trained a human before. He might hurt you accidentally."

You nodded your head, despite thinking about Deoxys the whole time, "I understand."

You actually saw a smile on Vardae's face, "Good."
